A1 German Certificate: What It Is and Why You Need It

Slug: a1-german-certificate-what-it-is-why-you-need-itPrimary keyword: Secondary keywords: Goethe A1 certificate Germany, A1 German for visaMeta description:

The A1 German certificate is the entry-level language qualification on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) scale — it proves you can introduce yourself, ask basic questions, and understand simple phrases. For Sri Lankans planning to go to Germany, A1 is required for the family reunion visa, one of the Opportunity Card language baselines, and is the first official milestone in the journey to B2. Most learners reach A1 in 2–4 months of regular study.

What A1 German Actually Means

At A1, you can:

  • Introduce yourself and others (name, age, nationality, where you live)

  • Ask and answer basic personal questions

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions

  • Interact simply when the other person speaks slowly and clearly

  • Write a simple postcard or fill in a basic form

A1 is not conversational fluency — it is the foundation. Think of it as learning the first few dozen words of a language map. But it is a significant and recognised first step.

Why You Need the A1 Certificate

For the Family Reunification Visa (Ehegattennachzug)If your spouse is in Germany and you want to join them, Germany requires you to demonstrate at least A1 German before your visa is issued — to ensure you can communicate at a basic level after arrival.

For the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) — German Language TrackThe Opportunity Card requires either A1 German OR B2 English as the language baseline. If you choose the German track, you only need A1 to meet the minimum requirement (though higher German levels earn more points).

As Your First Exam MilestoneThe official A1 certificate from Goethe-Institut (Start Deutsch 1) or ÖSD demonstrates to the German Embassy, employers, and educational institutions that you have begun and completed the first recognised level of German.

For Integration Requirements After ArrivalGerman integration courses begin from A2/B1. Completing A1 before arrival means you are not starting completely from zero and can make faster progress after arriving in Germany.

A1 Exam: Format and What to Expect

Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1):

  • Duration: approximately 65 minutes

  • Four modules: Reading (25 min), Listening (20 min), Writing (20 min), Speaking (15 min with examiner)

  • Pass mark: 60% per module

  • Certificate valid indefinitely once passed

ÖSD ZA1:

  • Similar four-skill format

  • Written and oral parts can be taken separately

  • Available at authorised ÖSD centres in Sri Lanka

How Long Does It Take to Prepare for A1?

Most Sri Lankan learners with no prior German knowledge require:

  • 2–3 months at 5 hours/week of structured study

  • 4–6 weeks at 10–15 hours/week (intensive)

A1 is designed to be achievable — it is the entry point. The challenge is not the difficulty but building the habit of studying a completely new language consistently.

What You Study at A1 Level

FAQ

  • Is A1 German enough to work in Germany? A1 alone is not sufficient for most employment — it is the minimum for visa eligibility (Opportunity Card language baseline, family reunification). Most work roles require B1–B2. However, A1 is the essential starting point for everyone.

  • How long is the Goethe A1 certificate valid? The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 does not expire — it is valid indefinitely. However, if applying for a family reunification visa, the German Embassy may request a certificate not older than 1–2 years in some cases.

  • Can I learn German A1 without attending a class? Yes — apps, YouTube, and free resources can take you to A1 level. However, for the speaking section of the A1 exam, you need practise with an instructor or conversation partner. Many students combine self-study with a short exam preparation course.

  • What comes after A1?

After A1, the next milestone is A2 (elementary), then B1 (lower intermediate), and B2 (upper intermediate — the most commonly required visa level). Each level builds on the previous one and typically requires 1.5–2× the study hours of the level before.
